You’re standing in front of twenty cereal boxes, frozen by choice. You tell yourself you’re being rational — weighing price, taste, health — but your brain decided long before you realized it.
Every decision we make is shaped by hidden shortcuts, emotions, and biases running quietly behind the scenes.
The Dual-Process Theory
Our brain uses two main systems when making decisions:
- System 1: Fast, automatic, and emotional.→ Example: Instinctively hitting the brakes when you see someone step into the road. Controlled by areas like the amygdala and basal ganglia.
- System 2: Slow, deliberate, and logical.→ Example: Comparing mortgage rates or planning your career. Relies on the prefrontal cortex, which handles reasoning, planning, and impulse control.

The shortcuts: heuristics
We use them because our brains face information overload every second – we’re constantly interpreting, comparing, and predicting. Instead of analysing every decision rationally (using System 2), we’d get stuck doing nothing (decision paralysis)
So our brain evolved to use mental shortcuts for making decisions quickly and efficiently.
They allow us to:
- React quickly in familiar or low-risk situations
- Save mental energy for complex or unfamiliar ones
But – if we use heuristics in the wrong context, they can cause cognitive biases: predictable, systematic errors in judgement

Dominance structuring
A common issue in our times, how individuals or groups attach to a decision or viewpoint and then build justifications around it – rather than genuinely evaluating alternatives.
Key features
- Often happens under uncertainty when a decision must be made quickly
- After a decision is taken, errors may arise as the decision maker is more focused on defending their choice than revisiting or challenging it
It leaves the decision maker less open to new information, whilst discouraging real deliberation.
This can then lead to inferior or flawed decisions that cement themselves as the maker is more focused on appearing ‘correct’
It appears often in military settings and one common example:
The Bay Of Pigs Invasion

What happened
President John F Kennedy planned a couvert invasion of Cuba to overthrow Castro, however many intelligence and military officials had serious doubts about the plans feasability
Despite clear warnings signs, the officials kept reassuring each other the plan would work.
This was because dominance structuring had taken hold: they had rationalised away objections (“we can fix the problems later”) and they ignored contradictory evidence
Result: The invasion failed catastrophically – exposing poor planning and flawed assumptions all due to a ‘dominant’ plan and thus reinterpreting all new information to defend it.
Emotional and Affective Influences (somatic marker hypothesis)
Neuroscientist Antonio Damasio showed that emotions are essential to decision-making.
Every time we experience something — like success, embarrassment, risk, or reward — our brain stores both the event and the emotional response that came with it. This emotional memory is linked to physical sensations in the body, such as a racing heartbeat, a tight stomach, or a calm feeling.
These bodily sensations are called somatic markers.
Later, when we face a similar decision, those stored emotions trigger physical sensations — tight stomach, relaxed feeling, faster heartbeat, etc.
These signals help us unconsciously judge which option is good or bad before we even think it through.
Our somatic markers help guide us — often unconsciously — toward good decisions and away from bad ones, before we even consciously reason it out.
Two key brain areas are involved:
- The amygdala links emotions like fear or pleasure to decisions.
- The ventromedial prefrontal cortex integrates these emotions into judgement.
Social and group influences
Human decisions are heavily social — we conform, obey, and seek belonging.
- Social context affects what we perceive, how we weigh risks, and which options we consider.
- Group and peer dynamics often override personal logic, even in high-stakes situations.
Asch’s Line Experiment (1951)
Conformity:
Separately participants were asked to visually compare a standard line to one of three comparison lines (the answer being obvious), a task where they were almost always correct when alone.
However, when they were joined by people who deliberately gave the wrong answer, a significant number of the real participants conformed to the incorrect majority at least once.
Sherif’s Autokinetic Effect Experiment (1936)
Informational social influence:
Participants were asked to estimate how far a small point of light in a dark room moved (it didn’t actually move – this is the auto kinetic effect)
When tested alone, estimates varied widely.
They were then placed in groups of three where they were supposed to estimate together and over time, the individuals estimates converged.
In the end, every decision we make—big or small—reflects what matters to us most. Whether driven by logic, emotion, or habit, our choices quietly shape the direction we take.
